Community & Wellness Services

Our Community

VNASC is not just mandated to care for those who have the means to pay for our services, but to care for those who have limited or no financial resources. “The people in our region” include those who are poor, disenfranchised, homeless, children, under-insured, jobless, mentally ill, single mothers, suffering from addiction . . . it’s everyone. And this group is growing every day. In fact, with the help of many generous donors, we provided over $550,000 in free and subsidized care last year. In addition to the skilled nurses, physical therapists, home health aides, nutritionists, social workers, and other professionals who made home visits to those who could not afford to pay, we also provided numerous foot care clinics at area homeless shelters, nurse-managed wellness clinics in New London, East Lyme and Groton, and critical support to poor first-time mothers and their babies.

Wellness Services

What is Wellness? Wellness is a positive approach to life and health that involves the “whole” person;wellness can also be described as a dynamic state of health.

One of VNASC’s Core Values is to share responsibility with the community for improving its health status. This value is realized through VNASC’s Wellness Program. Our Wellness Services include screening clinics, health fairs, health education, and immunization clinics throughout Southeastern Connecticut. Screenings may include blood pressure checks; cholesterol tests; glucose tests; and/or height, weight, and body mass index measurements. Health education sessions may include topics such as nutrition; stress management; arthritis; weight management; first aid; cancer; diabetes; smoking cessation; heart health; stroke prevention; and blood borne pathogens. VNASC offers wellness services an adult who is receiving support and education on how to stop smoking or an elderly person who comes to one of our many blood pressure clinics for ongoing blood pressure monitoring. Services are provided by one of our Wellness nurses – RN’s who work with members of the community to help improve their health.
