Maternal child nurses are available for mothers and infants throughout the ante natal and post natal periods. Mothers at risk for poor birth outcomes may be referred by their primary health care provider. In the post natal period the referral for a visit may be made by the hospital staff in conjunction with the obstetrician or pediatrician.

Education and support during the adjustment to parenthood is important for a successful outcome. VNASC’s nurse can lend that support in areas such as nutrition and infant development.

VNASC has begun an intensive nurse visiting program called Nurse Family Care. First time mothers who may have social, emotional, or physical factors that could impede a successful birth may be referred. The program offers nursing intervention from the pregnancy through the child’s second birthday. This very special program has been designed after a successful evidenced based program with documented outcomes for both mother and child.
