As the temperatures rise and we all want to enjoy the outdoors, we must be mindful of the risks associated with the heat. Heat exhaustion and heat stroke can be serious situations especially for the young and the old among us. As in most cases knowledge is the key to staying healthy. Be wise and know what can put you at risk:
So practice good prevention by avoiding extreme heat exposure if you are in a risk category. And don’t put yourself at risk by overworking or exercising during the heat of the day. Wear light loose clothing, keep hydrated, stay indoors if need be, and keep an eye on those family and friends who are at risk. Many elderly do not notice the heat and may stay in a closed up environment or be overdressed for the temperature. Do not leave children or the elderly in hot cars with little or no ventilationeven for a few minutes. The car can become an oven in an amazingly short time.

If you suspect heat exhaustion you should get the person to a cool place, give them cool fluids and have them rest. If they are unable to hold down fluids or if they become confused, you should get them to medical care immediately.
